A Guide to Public Transportation Along the Appalachian Trail
This is a resource of all the public transportation options along the AT I could find. Feel free to let me know of any more and I will add them. Additionally, here's a link to shuttle providers that can help fill in the gaps: Shuttles
NOTE - I was using the 2013 Thru-Hiker's Companion as a reference for the mile numbers, so they may be a little off. Use this as a planning guide, not a trail guide.
The first number is the number of miles from Springer and the number in parentheses is the number of miles from Katahdin. I tried to include the location of the stop and a link the the website for all of these. For the smaller services I tried to find information on connecting towns/cities. I considered a link to Megabus, Greyhound and Amtrak to be a link to anywhere. The same for DC, Boston, NYC and Bangor, Albany and Burlington.
Georgia

- The AT Hiker Hostel will shuttle you to Springer from Gainesville, GA
Virginia

- Port Jervis NJ Transit train - about 7 mi N (Trail W) on NJ 23. Connection to NYC.

New York
· 1365/1368 (821/818) - Greenwood Lake, NY.
- Take the blue trail down to the baseball field or walk into town from Rt 17A and catch a NJ Transit bus to NYC. There are several places to catch the bus.
· 1380 (806) - Rt 17 x Arden Valley Rd
- Just outside Harriman SP. Wave down Shortline bus to NYC.
- NJ Transit train stop at Harriman - about 2.3 mi N (Trail W)
· 1397 (789) – Bear Mtn Inn
- Shortline bus to NYC from the Bear Mtn Inn.
· 1406 (780) - Graymoor Friary
- Metro North train station in Garrison, NY to NYC. Usually there’s a number for a cab company and food delivery at the pavilion hikers can sleep under.
- There are several trails that intersect the AT that will connect you directly to Garrison. They’re all between Manitou Rd and US 9. Take any of the yellow or blue trails north (trail W) to a red trail. Don’t go uphill when you reach the red trail, go north. Eventually you’ll get to Rt 9D, cross the street and take the white trail to the blue trail, which will take you to the train station. Don’t cross the tracks.

- Turn S (trail E) on CR20 and walk about 3 mi into Pawling, NY for Metro North train.

- Weekend service on Metro North. Walk S (trail E) to Pawling, NY if it's a weekday. It’s about 2 miles S (trail E).
· 1450/1451 (735/736) Duell Hollow Rd/Hoyt Rd
- Turn N (trail W) and make a left at and NY55, which turns into NY22 and walk to the Wingdale Metro North station. Stop at Cousin's Cafe and get an egg sandwich or brick oven pizza.

Massachusetts
· 1518 (668) – US 7/Great Barrington, MA
- Berkshire Regional Transit Authority. Connection to Pittsfield, MA. BRTA stop is at Rite Aid.
